(N writing) On Chinese New Years Day, Wee Lee & Felicia (Chinese branch members) called and asked if we'd like to go to a small fishing village and visit the family home where Chuk and Brian grew up. They were already there visiting with the whole family. Chuk is the single Mom (3 boys) in our branch and Brian is her brother. He's married to a gal from Hong Kong and they have one little girl. Wee Lee drove our car and Felicia drove her car with Wee Lee's sister and boyfriend. Though paved roads all the way, there are soooo many pot holes, especially since the recent long rain. They do go around and asphalt the holes, but it's a pretty poor job and they don't seem to seal, so they don't stay covered very long.
This is Chuk - she teaches school, although recently quit and is thinking about coming back to U.S. to get MBA at BYU. Having a hard time deciding. Brian on the right is a computer whiz and works for a company here in JB and we call him when we can't muscle through a computer problem on our own. His Chinese accent is quite challenging for us. This is the well where they get their water in the family home. It was in one corner of the kitchen area. It's deep - we asked if anyone had ever fallen in (8 children raised in this home) Brian said no, but when he was a kid he had to climb down in and clean it. They send the bucket down and draw the water up. It has provided water for this family for many years.
This is just to the side of the well. Chuk is giving her little boy a bath in a little plastic tub. It was a sunny day and you can see the sunshine coming through the roof. Well, using the term roof very loosely here.
Here are the parents - not members - such good people. He worked hard to raise 8 children. Had a boat and transported goods and people to Singapore. Also fished and ran this little store in the front of where they lived. Chuk says not one thing ever went to waste in their home. He worked hard. He now does all he can to help his children - one runs about 8 clothing stores here in Asia. They were very unhappy about their children joining the church but have seen that it's good in their lives. Although they have no interest for themselves. He supported the boys getting an education, but did not see it was necessary for the girls. So Chuk just did it on her own - went to BYU Hawaii. They now do not want her to leave and go so far away back to U.S. Dad told her he'll help her start a little store of her own. She doesn't think that's what she wants to do.

We walked to the jetty and took this picture of some of the residences where people live who still fish for a living. Although Singapore has put an 'ocean fence' in and most people here can no longer make a living from the sea.
This funny little man was so interested in Dad, although we could NOT understand what he said. He was more than willing to post for a picture with the American. You might want to click on the pic a couple of times to get a good close up of his face. Very friendly. He was very interested in Garald's badge and we tried to explain what we do.
