We had district meeting here this morning. Elder Blissett, who is district leader, conducted. As he welcomed us this June 21, I remembered it's officially the first day of summer. It's always summer here. But Elder Harvey remembered that today is National Go Skateboarding Day. (U.S.) Well, learn something new every day. Just what we needed to know. We had a good meeting and lunch (sweet\sour pork) turned out okay. After the meeting we were playing around on the computer at LDS.org and found the maps section. Each elder had a lot of fun looking up his home area and giving us a little guided tour of his neighborhood, park, school, etc. It was kind of fun, but made us all a little trunky. Elder Harvey goes home in 30 days.
A couple of Saturdays ago the Young Women (3 of them and the president) came to our place and made cupcakes. They seemed to have a lot of fun. They had never used an electric mixer or an oven. They REALLY loved the frosting decorations and tips and bags that the kids sent to us. Very well used. Each girl took a plate home and also a plate to the elders, who loved them (they love anything edible)
I've been going to post 'eggs' pictures especially for Becky. This country would roll up and die without rice and eggs - we see them at EVERY meal. Eggs are always brown - never seen white. Well, amend that to a few speckled\strange kinds at the end of the aisle, but we haven't ever bought them.
The basket you see is a customer's purchase for that day. As you can see they come in flats, or in cartons on the shelf - always 10 to a carton. And eggs are NEVER refrigerated. Seem to do fine. Although, I don't think they ever wash them either, as I've seen bits of feather and gunk on them sometimes. Usually sell for about 4.oofm (ringet money) per 10 eggs - that would be about$ 1.25 U.S.

Last Tuesday afternoon we went to Regina's house as she has been asking for quite some time for me to show her how to make a cake. This is her little girl. Mattresses are usually standing against the wall in many homes - just pull them down at night. She's a darling, shy little girl who has been having some mean things happen to her at school. Always comes home crying - so Regina has pulled her out of school for now. Kind of heart breaking. Both of her children are very small - think they mostly eat rice\noodles - seldom fruits or vegetables. They do the best they can.
This is Regina in front of her newly purchased very tiny oven. I had brought all ingredients and a 9 x 13 pan which would not fit in her oven. So she ran to the neighborhood 'kedai' (store) and came home with a large round one. I was so afraid there wasn't enough air circulation for it to bake, but thankfully it did and she was extremely pleased. No counter space to speak of and no mixer, but she now has a pan, an oven and a recipe. Hooray! She loves chocolate. (Well, she's a typical woman, right?) She doesn't speak English and my Malay wasn't sufficient, so Sister Norma (our beloved, ever-helpful member) translated between the two of us. I was so worried about it and so grateful when it baked and seemed to be fine.
This is the sink area, just to the left of the 'new oven' area. Not exactly the kitchen standards I'm used to, but it works. It's always being barefoot in these houses that makes me a little squeamish sometimes. Boy, the places my bare feet have been! You know, I just might come home with that 'coveted' item that is a running joke in our family. They know what I mean. I'll share.
Saturday night, Agnes and Peter had us for dinner. This is a little Father's Day cake they had purchased to honor Peter and Garald. They were so proud of it and it was really tasty. We were surprised they even mentioned Father's Day. It's not something that's celebrated here. Very kind of them.
Sister Norma gave us this bunch of 'little bananas' off the tree in her back yard. They were yummy and we managed to eat most of them and give some away to families who could use them.
